What should I do if I receive IRS Form 1099-MISC?

If you’ve worked as an independent contractor during the taxable year, Form 1099-MISC will be mailed to you. The 1099-MISC is an informational form that U.S. businesses are required to send to people when they pay more than $600 for services during the previous year.

According to the IRS, you do not need to have a business for payments for your services to be reported on Form 1099-MISC. You may simply perform services as a non-employee.

When you receive Form 1099-MISC, see if the total in Box 7 – Nonemployee Compensation, matches your financial records. It's important to confirm that your 1099-MISC is correct because the IRS also gets a copy and this can have income tax implications for you.

From the time the IRS accepts your federal return, it will take about 3 weeks to receive your refund. The sooner you file, the sooner you will receive your refund. You can get your refund sooner if you choose direct deposit, and even faster if you combine e-file with direct deposit.

You can track the status of your tax refund by visiting the IRS website and using their Where’s My Refund" tool. You can check your status 24 hours after the IRS has received your e-file or 4 weeks after mailing in your return. To use the tool, you will need your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identifcation Number (ITIN), your filing status, and the exact whole dollar refund amount shown on your tax return. You will see a result of either “Return Received”, “Refund Approved”, or “Refund Sent”.
